It's not a vote it's a pure fact, the 5990 was rated a much faster card than the utterly disappointing Nvidia 4xx series.

.I don't know much about what the GTX 480 is capable of, but I'm sure both cards could run any game on the market at the moment.

Not always the case, depends on what PSU you originally bought. Most people say to get a bigger powersupply because its the one part you can futureproof.
I would take the 5970 over a GTX 480, but are the rest of your parts going to be on the same level?
