But still not worth it unless hes trying to push 4Ghz+, which is pretty useless since by the time games can take advantage of that power, he will be able to buy a better CPU with the money he could've saved by going with a lower i7.

afaik he does a lot of work (real work!) with sony vegas, where every single MHz counts

You got it there! And yes I stayed with the 965. Don't care what others say. I am going to overclock it to something round 3.8GHz.
And that also explains the high amount of RAM.

lol, nvm....didnt notice the ECC RAM
With watercooling, you could easily push it to 4Ghz
