The concept of a spherical Earth dates back to ancient Greek philosophy from around the 6th century BC, but remained a matter of philosophical speculation until the 3rd century BC when Hellenistic astronomy established the spherical shape of the earth as a physical given
The earliest evidence of a spherical Earth comes from ancient Greek sources
Aristotle (384–322 BC);
Aristotle provided physical and observational arguments supporting the idea of a spherical Earth:

Every portion of the Earth tends toward the center until by compression and convergence they form a sphere. (De caelo, 297a9–21)
Travelers going south see southern constellations rise higher above the horizon; and
The shadow of Earth on the Moon during a lunar eclipse is round. (De caelo, 297b31–298a10)

And it goes on and on with other people from that age

How could Mohammad know that?
Ah, so illiterate people can read?
and also conclude the fact that the earth is spherical?

the pre-Islamic age in the Arabic peninsula was called "the Ignorant age", people only cared about four things: food, shelter, creed and women.
so the illiterate man who has never seen his father and never been taught poetry waits till he spends 40 years of his life then BAM, i'm a poet.. and wow, my poet says that the earth is spherical, no it also says that it's not completely spherical.

The universe is expanding continuously:

[Isaiah:55:9] For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.

[Quran:47:51]And the heavens, we built them with might and we are (it's) expander.

The ancient Greeks recognized that it was difficult to imagine what an infinite universe might look like. But they also wondered that if the universe were finite, and you stuck out your hand at the edge, where would your hand go? The Greeks' two problems with the universe represented a paradox - the universe had to be either finite or infinite, and both alternatives presented problems.

(This obviously doesnt show how the universe is expanding, but neither are those two lines from the bible and quran. It simply shows that these books werent the first to "mention" it)

I agree.

Law of conservation of mass and energy:

[2 Peter:3:7] But the heavens and the earth, which are now, by the same word are kept in store.

[Quran:54:49]
Verily, all things have We created in proportion and measure.
[Quran:13:8]Every single thing is before His sight, in (due) proportion.

This is nothing but dumbass interpretation.
"Verily, all things have We created in proportion and measure." has nothing to do with the universe
http://theheartopener.wordpress.com/sins/41-disbelieving-in-destiny-qadar/

"But the heavens and the earth, which are now, by the same word are kept in store."
This can be interprated in so many ways you have no fucking idea.

The law of conservation of energy sounds as follows: (Simply put)
The total amount of energy in a system remains constant over time.
Energy can neither be created nor destroyed: it can only be transformed from one state to another. The only thing that can happen to energy in a system is that it can change form: for instance chemical energy can become kinetic energy.

Ancient philosophers as far back as Thales of Miletus had inklings of the conservation of which everything is made
Even back then.

I agree.

Re: [Serious Discussion] Religion - durrrrr - 06-25-2011

So wait, wait. Is the miracle that
1) Muhammed somehow found out that Earth is spherical?
2) Muhammed somehow got to know (being isolated from knowledge) what is already know?

Which one is the miracle?

Re: [Serious Discussion] Religion - Tuism - 06-25-2011

Prophet Mohammad didn't know anything about it, and he didn't write the Quran.

Re: [Serious Discussion] Religion - Maddolis - 06-25-2011

I can understand the Muslims' frustration, if I were animated on a crappy cartoon like Family Guy I'd be pissed off too.

But which is the miracle? Is it that Muhammad made a conclusion that the Earth is round, or is it that Muhammad, as an illiterate man, from somewhere got to know already known information, and it would be impossible for such a person to get to that information?

Is STyL4 muted? I was looking forward to a big "debate" but nothing happened. TD posted a day after the planned date and nothing happened after that.

Re: [Serious Discussion] Religion - Maka - 07-04-2011

Topic died when the atheists left it?
